Verità e bellezza nelle fotografie di Giovanni Matarazzo (English text below)


Non è facile definire la bellezza e non lo è mai stato nonostante i trattati fin dall’antichità abbiano tentato di dare un contenuto a questa parola; tantomeno è facile, oggi, con le distorsioni alle quali i nostri occhi si devono abituare, e purtroppo si sono in parte abituati. Distorsioni mediatiche della vita quotidiana, per cui forse non siamo neanche più in grado di definire sia pur vagamente quel concetto, sul quale tutto il mondo della cultura, visiva e non, ha dibattuto per secoli. Il concetto di bellezza è variato, mutato, trasmutato; rimane però che oggi, i nostri parametri essendo diversi, non possiamo e non vogliamo più usare una definizione classica. Siamo circondati da orrori, da morti, da agonie, da eventi di una violenza inimmaginabile e quindi ricondurre il nostro stato d’animo a una realtà che comunque esiste - quella del ‘bello’ -, ma che noi non vediamo perché siamo offuscati, è una necessità, tanto più intricata quanto più imprescindibile.

Rimane Adorno il miglior profeta, secondo me, e la bellezza sempre più assume una valenza etica, senza la quale l’arte oggi non avrebbe senso.

La bellezza in fotografia, forse, è ancor più complessa da definire perché noi stiamo guardando con gli occhi di un altro. Ciò accade, ovviamente, anche nelle altre forme di arte visiva ma in modo molto diverso, perché in un dipinto, in una scultura o in un disegno, l’artista ha avuto il tempo di predisporre l’opera, di elaborarla, di apporre correzioni e di offrirci l’opera finita soltanto a conclusione del suo tragitto.

La fotografia è affidata allo scatto - sia pure scelto, ma hic et nunc, dall’artista che lo determina - quindi un tempo minimale di ricerca e un tempo minimale di fattura, anche se l’artista ha trascorso mesi prima di effettuarlo e ha aspettato quel giorno e quell’attimo per metterlo in opera. Con tutte le variabili possibili, che possono essere suscitate da un imprevisto nell’opera in fieri e, appunto, senza possibilità di modifiche o di ripensamenti.

In questo sito Giovanni Matarazzo presenta opere inedite e per lo più in bianco e nero. Alla fine di alcune sezioni, soltanto, appaiono una o più fotografie a colori, colori netti, nitidi, ma più che mai onirici per effetto della grande abilità di saper cogliere la luce interna, e spesso nascosta, delle cose.
Le opere in bianco e nero in sé e per sé potrebbero sembrare una negazione della realtà, ma la fotografia non è una riproduzione fedele del reale, così come non lo sarà mai una pittura, il cui linguaggio è per definizione lontano dalla valenza della realtà. In altri termini la fotografia in bianco e nero - i due non colori per eccellenza - tocca l’essenza delle cose, sfronda la visuale del superfluo, attraverso la forza delle tonalità, delle ombre, dei contrasti.

Nelle fotografie di Giovanni c’è una ricerca di cogliere quell’attimo, che dia il senso di una bellezza interna, non vista in superficie, in un certo senso ‘rubata’. Un volto, un fiore, un’architettura, un paesaggio sono parti di un contesto nel quale sembra che non ci possa più essere spazio per il concetto di bellezza oppure sono assolutamente decontestualizzate.
Questo è il grande esito, il messaggio che possiamo cogliere dalle fotografie di Giovanni. Ci aiuta a recuperare non solo il passato, inteso come stratificazioni o come sovrapposizioni tangibili, ma ben di più ci aiuta a recuperare la memoria di qualcosa che si sta perdendo. La memoria della bellezza come entità, emozione, sensazione, sentimento, ai quali e dai quali la nostra percezione visiva si sta allontanando inevitabilmente.
Guardando le fotografie di Giovanni apriamo gli occhi su un passaggio, un’apertura verso altri sensi che ci conducono a una definizione, anche personale, del mondo dentro il quale respiriamo e che attraverso queste fotografie si può cogliere e può a sua volta essere raccontato.

La nostra vita quotidiana, in qualsiasi attimo, nasconde un racconto, ma l’attitudine a riconoscerlo e a utilizzarlo in quanto ‘estetico’ è decisamente limitata in ognuno di noi. E dunque questo si chiede agli artisti: di aiutarci a fermare quei racconti, di identificarli, di legittimarli come fatto estetico, e quindi etico, di aiutarci a non trascurare la nostra memoria e di immettere dubbi o convincimenti, in grado di dissipare quella sorta di stagnazione che spesso interferisce con la capacità di sapere incontrare il ‘bello’.

Così, se guardiamo le varie sezioni del sito di Giovanni Matarazzo, ci rendiamo subito conto che non si tratta di soggetti astrusi o lontano da noi. Sono oggetti, paesaggi, ritratti, luoghi con cui entriamo in contatto ogni giorno. Ma il modo in cui sono rappresentati trascende la loro soggettività e li conduce e ci conduce in una soggettività altra: quella che ognuno di noi vi può riconoscere di sé, e in sé. Gli accadimenti o i momenti, che Giovanni ha fissato con uno scatto, ci sono talmente riconoscibili che lo sguardo diviene immediatamente curioso e cerca, si interroga sul perché non è mai riuscito a vedere la realtà con quegli stessi lineamenti, con quelle stesse tonalità, con quegli stessi profili o contorni. Con quei segni e con quelle forme, insomma, che ci sembra di vedere per la prima volta, attraverso l’occhio di un grande fotografo: oggetti, persone e territori che ci appartengono e, forse, non lo sapevamo.
Mi viene in mente il lavoro di Christo che, nascondendo la bellezza, ci introduceva a disvelarla. Mi viene in mente Gian Lorenzo Bernini quando scolpisce La Verità svelata dal Tempo. Nelle nostre giornate, spesso raccapricciate dalla fatica, dalla stanchezza, dall’indolenza, non troviamo più la forza di cogliere quanto di bello, quanto di immortale, in qualche modo, c’è in ogni oggetto, in ogni persona, in ogni paesaggio che ci circonda.

In queste opere di Giovanni i due concetti - bellezza e verità - sono collimanti, equivalenti, offerti senza fronzoli, senza retorica, e soprattutto senza inutili alterazioni: le immagini sono qui pronte per essere lette, cristallizzate in un tempo e in uno spazio, le cui linee di confine - apparentemente ben delimitate dal riquadro nero - sono in realtà apertissime, perché invadono lo spazio e il tempo del riguardante.
Per fortuna da tempo la leggenda dell’immagine fotografica come rappresentazione tout court è stata sfatata. La fotografia esprime l’assenza, oltre che la presenza, e quindi ancor maggiori sono il suo portato etico e quello di verità, che tuttavia non possono prescindere dalla sapienza tecnica nell’uso della macchina fotografica e nella conoscenza degli effetti che uno scatto produrrà. Nel caso di Giovanni Matarazzo e delle sue fotografie, questi dati sono più che evidenti e una sezione del sito è dedicata alla tecnica di cui si avvale.


Un’ultima considerazione attiene ancora al rapporto tra il nostro sguardo e le fotografie, che qui stiamo guardando. Si manifesta, di fronte alle opere di Giovanni, quello che sosteneva Lacan e cioè che anche “le cose ci guardano”. Questo doppio rapporto - tra noi che guardiamo e le cose che ci guardano - segna un legame inscindibile, una complicità nella visione e dentro la visione, che di nuovo ci riconduce alla bellezza come etica, incardinando le immagini a una funzione emancipatrice.

Truth and beauty in Giovanni Matarazzo’s Photographs

It is not and never has been easy to define beauty, despite the treatises that, since antiquity, have sought to give this word content. Nor is it easy today, with the distortions to which our eyes are continuously exposed, and to which they have unfortunately become partially inured. Because of routine media distortions, we perhaps can no longer even vaguely define that concept which the world of culture, visual or otherwise, has debated for centuries. The concept of beauty is varied, changing and mutating over time. Thus, with our parameters being different today, we cannot and no longer wish to use a classical definition. We are surrounded by horror, death, agony, events of unimaginable violence. Therefore, endeavoring to turn our spirit towards “beauty”, a reality that nonetheless exists – despite the fact that our view of it may be hazy – becomes all the more essential because it is so difficult to grasp.

In my opinion, Adorno remains the best prophet, and beauty has increasingly taken on an ethical value, without which art today would make no sense.

The beauty in photography is perhaps even more difficult to define because we are looking through someone else’s eyes. This happens, of course, also in other visual art forms but in a very different way, because in a painting, a sculpture, or a drawing, the artist has had time to prepare the work, develop it, make corrections, and offer us the finished product only at the end of the process.

Photography relies on a click, after minimal study and with minimal action. It is based on a split-second decision; although the artist may have spent months before taking the photograph, waiting for that particular day and instant to snap it. Consequently, the work will include all the unforeseeable variables that can materialize in the moment it is taken with no possibility for changes or second thoughts.

On this site, Giovanni Matarazzo presents new works, in black and white for the most part, with one or more color photographs appearing only at the end of some sections. The latter’s colors are sharp and vivid, yet more oneiric because of his great skill in capturing the inner, often hidden light of things.

In and of themselves, his black-and-white works might seem to deny reality, but a photograph is not a faithful reproduction, no more than is a painting whose language, by definition, distances it from reality. In other words, a photograph in black and white – the two quintessential non-colors – seeks the essence of things, cropping the superfluous through the intensity of tonalities, shades, and contrasts.

Giovanni’s photographs endeavor to capture the moment, giving a sense of an inner, hidden beauty that, in a certain sense, has been “stolen”. A face, a flower, a building, a landscape are part of a context in which there no longer seems to be room for the concept of beauty unless they are totally decontextualized.

This is the grand result of the message that we understand from Giovanni’s photographs. It helps us not only to recover the past, understood as stratifications or clear overlaps, but even more to retrieve the memory of something that is being lost – thememory of beauty as a value, emotion, sensation, feeling to which and from which our visual perception has inescapably been moving away.

Looking at Giovanni’s photographs our eyes begin to see an opening towards other perceptions that guide us to a new, even a personal, vision of the world in which we live and which, through these photographs, can be understood and, in turn, retold.

Every moment of our daily lives hides a story. However, the ability to recognize and use that story “aesthetically” is decidedly limited in each of us. As a result, artists are asked to help us collect these stories, to identify and validate them as an aesthetic and hence ethical action, to help us to not close our eyes to memory, and to welcome doubts or convictions capable of dissipating that stagnation which often interferes with our ability to experience beauty.

If we look at the various sections of Giovanni Matarazzo’s site, we immediately realize that it does not deal with obscure or remote subjects but rather objects, landscapes, portraits, and places with which we come into contact daily. Yet the way in which they are depicted transcends their subjectivity and leads them and us to a different subjectivity in which we can each recognize ourselves. The events or moments that Giovanni has defined with a click are so recognizable that our eyes immediately become curious and seek a reality with those same features, tones, shapes, or outlines, while wondering why no one has ever managed to see it before. In short, we seem to be seeing for the first time with the eye of a great photographer those signs and forms, objects, people and lands that belong to us which we perhaps had not known.

I am reminded of Christo whose works invited us to unveil beauty by hiding, it, and of Gian Lorenzo Bernini when he was sculpting Truth Unveiled by Time. In our times, often dismayed by struggle, weariness, and indolence, we no longer find the strength to understand how much beauty, how much immortality exists in some way in every object, every person, and every landscape that surrounds us.

In these works by Giovanni, the two concepts of beauty and truth coincide and are equivalent, offered without frills or rhetoric, and, above all, without needless alterations. The images here are ready to be interpreted, crystallized in a time and space whose boundaries – seemingly clearly contained within a black frame – are actually wide open, invading the observer’s space and time.

Fortunately, the myth of a photographic image as representation has been debunked for some time. A photograph expresses absence as well as presence, and consequently its ethical dimensions and truth are even greater, although they cannot be separated from the technical expertise and awareness of the effects produced by a click. In the case of Giovanni Matarazzo and his photographs, this is evident as one section of the site is dedicated to the technique he uses.

One final consideration concerns once more the relationship between the observer and these photographs. Standing before Giovanni‘s works, that which Lacan maintained comes true, namely that also "things watch us". This dual relationship between us as onlookers and the things looking back at us creates an indissoluble bond, a complicity in a reciprocal viewing that leads us back to beauty as ethics, focusing on the emancipating function of images.
